yes, backups all the way are highly recommended, in fact I recommend to use a revision control tool such as subversion to archive database dump changes.
In regards to my original request, the site in question actually barely uses CB - it simply collects mailing lists that a user is on, so we have decided to remove it until needed, as we need a different mailing list solution in any case.
So, unfortunately can't offer any more knowledge until I come across the next J1.0 CB site.
