Captcha image not appearing in back or frontend

Captcha image not appearing in back or frontend was created by dennmans
I have so far tried the backend, where the prerequisites are Green:

Plugin Prerequisites
Captcha Requirements: GD: bundled (2.0.34 compatible)
Freetype: enabled

The sound popup does work (if a bit wonky on my Ubuntu machine) and that allows the registration to complete. I have only tried it at registration.

Sorry if this is a double post by the way - I did quite a bit of searching but issues don't seem to match this one.

Is my GD too old?

Have you tried both captcha modes? Please edit "CB Captcha" within CB > Plugin Management and try both options for "Captcha images and sound mode:". Please ensure the plugin is published when performing your tests as it won't work with "Joomla's index.php" if it's not published. Your GD version is fine (same as mine). Please also ensure you're using CB Captcha 2.4 (latest).

Thanks for the reply, yes I have tried both with sound on and off. The plugin is published. It is version 2.4.
