Found instructions at: www.joomlapolis.com/support/tutorials/95-installation/18199-cb-quick-installation-check-list

1. Download latest CB distribution package from:
www.joomlapolis.com/downloads/cat_view/77-free-member-download-area
(please note that your must be a registered member and must be logged in to access)
2. Unzip locally to reveal contents
3. Read the included Installation PDF document and verify that your environment meets the prerequisites outlined in Section 1.4.
4. Use your Joomla Extension Installer (exact Joomla menu navigation depends on Joomla version) to install the CB component (com_comprofiler.zip), the CB Login module (mod_cblogin.zip), the CB Workflows module (mod_comprofilerModerator.zip), the CB Online module (mod_comprofilerOnline.zip). The last two modules are optional.
5. Visit your Community Builder -> Configuration area and save the parameters (you need to save once for CB component to load the initial parameters ā€“ I usually just change the first parameter in the first tab to ā€˜First and Last Name Fieldā€™ and save). You can visit this area in the future and modify parameters as needed.
6. Visit your Community Builder -> Tools area and run all tools to verify that everything is green.
7. Create a PUBLIC menu item to the Community Builder ā€˜User Profile (mandatory!)ā€™ menu item selection. THIS MUST BE PUBLIC because of the CB Registration form which is accessed by public users. I usually call this menu ā€œMy Profileā€ and put it in a Menu that is published for Registered members. This way only logged in members will see the My Profile link.
8. Publish installed modules in a relevant position that is supported by your template. CB Login module must be published to PUBLIC (the other optional CB modules can be published to Registered or Special).
9. Verify that you can login frontend using the CB Login module.
10. Done! CB is installed and default configuration is in place.

Steps 1 thru 6 went fine. Steps 9 is also ok, but steps 7 and 8? Please explain in detail these two steps.

I also have cbqspro_guide_1.5.pdf with its many fine screen images.
where can I find the 1.9 version, which is what I uploaded and installed.

a. I was 'ok' until I got to figure 3. None of the CB fields noted appear. How do make them appear?

b. can't get past this to get to the following items.

Please note this is a completely new website, Joomla 3.0.3 , etc

You need to create a Joomla menu link to CBs profile page. This link absolutely must be Public and Published. Its Itemid is used by CB throughout and if it's not Public and Published then CB registration and login will have issues as well as other links will break. With that said it doesn't need to be visible. You can place it on a menu type that does not have a menu module published so the Itemid can still function.

I also have cbqspro_guide_1.5.pdf with its many fine screen images

That's for the Quickstart Pro package only.

Your detailed documentation can be found in the Advanced downloads section as "CB 1.9 Detailed Documentation for Adv/Pro/Dev members".

Thanks. You have said What needs to be done, and Why, but not HOW. As you might guess, I am new to Joomla and have a small clue, but not enough. What makes my situation difficult more, is the phone cable to our part of town was cut by thieves and they took 40 meters of the cable. No internet... No house phone...

Welcome you Joomla and to CB!

As a Professional member you can also download everything from the Advanced download area.
In this area you will find the Detailed CB 1.9 documentation.

You have said What needs to be done, and Why, but not HOW. As you might guess, I am new to Joomla and have a small clue, but not enough.

No worries, navigate to Joomla backend then perform the below steps and you should be good to go.
  1. Navigate to Menus > Menu Manager > Add New Menu
  2. Set "Title" to "Hidden"
  3. Set "Menu type" to "hidden"
  4. Click "Save & Close"
  5. Navigate to Menus > Hidden > Add New Menu Item
  6. Set "Menu Item Type" to "User Profile (mandatory!)"
  7. Set "Menu Title" to "Profile" (you can change this if you like)
  8. Set "Menu Alias" to "profile" (you can change this if you like)
  9. Click "Save & Close"

With the above done you should be good to go as you'll now have a public and published Joomla menu link to CBs profile. Please note this is detailed within your documentation as well with pictures so if you need further details please see your documentation.

What makes my situation difficult more, is the phone cable to our part of town was cut by thieves and they took 40 meters of the cable. No internet... No house phone...

That's quite unfortunate and hope everything works out for you.

Thanks for the detailed steps. However, I have a mystery.

Somehow (magic?) the result of the steps was already done! I know I gave it a try before, but I did not have your detailed steps. So, Thanks to you I was able to verify it is ok.

I continued attempting to turn things on, and the website does show more things, but...

I am out of my depth. Do you know someone I could trust to work on the website a couple of days, just to get it up and 'awake'? I am happy to pay, via paypal or by check.

The checklists I see are intended as a 'reminder' for someone who already knows. What I need is a checklist for the 'rank' beginner. I am not a beginner in computer programming, systems analysis, databases and so on, but know next to nothing about Joomla and Community Builder.
