I am developing a site with adult content, and because of that my choices for payment gateways is extremely limited. Of the existing gateways, I am only certain of CCBill accepting adult content sites, and due to their policies (minimum/maximum payment amounts), they will not work for this site. I am still shopping around for alternatives, but am fairly certain when I find an acceptable solution, it will not be on the existing list of payment gateway integrations. Is it possible for me to add a custom payment gateway? What is involved in doing this? If not, what are my options?

We provide both Payza and CCBill which both allow adult content. Payza used to be called AlertPay so you may find more information on AlertPay when searching for gateways, but it's Payza now. Both are leading gateways in the adult industry so either should work perfectly fine.

Note if you're selling adult materials and not subscriptions then you can use PayPal. They only have issues with adult subscription services. You should contact them and see what they have to say if you want PayPal.

Is it possible for me to add a custom payment gateway?

Yes, if you have CBSubs GPL then nothing is encoded and you're free to modify existing gateways or create entirely new ones as needed.

What is involved in doing this?

Extensive knowledge of PHP usage, security standards, and gateway API usage. If you don't fit any of these criteria you may want to hire someone to do it that is familiar with the gateway you want.

On searching AlertPay, I saw it had become Payza, and saw no mention of Payza here on the joomlapolis site; I was unsure if it was supported. I have not verified if they will work (hopefully, they, unlike CCBill, allow for both small and large transactions). Unfortunately, all I am selling is subscriptions, so PayPal is out. I have heard of loopholes with PayPal, using a separate intermediary site to sell 'credits' then applied to the adult site; but I do not wish to use loopholes and risk having some or all funds frozen.

If I do require custom gateway modification, I will certainly need to find assistance or hire a professional to do so.

I highly suggest using Payza as from what I understand it's the closest to PayPal, but allows for adult content. Our implementation is for single and recurring payments as well so it's completed (most gateways outside of PayPal are only funded for single payments typically).

Having checked Payza's site, they state that "Adult content and pornography (Payouts for affiliate commission acceptable)" is an activity not allowed...

So while AlertPay may have allowed it, obviously Payza does not.

That's unfortunate news. Seams they've discontinued adult content support for liability reasons. Unfortunately your gateway selection is going to be extremely limited. Some of the more vague lesser known gateways we do not support and will not support (they have no track record or reputation for us to trust).

What about CCBill won't fit your needs? We use their Dynamic Pricing API so you shouldn't have any price limits if you use Single payments. For recurring payments duration is the only limiting factor as they only permit durations in Weeks, Months, or Years.
