[SOLVED] CB and CB subs compatibility with J3.x

9 years 8 months ago - 9 years 8 months ago #259103 by MasterNABO
I have a J2.5 site that is working with CB 1.9.1 and CB subs 2.02.
I have no need to use CB Subs 3.0
I wish to migrate the site to J3.x, and have tried repeatedly to use the standard upgrade to J3.3 without success. It is all a terrible waste of time.

I am now attempting a new build on J3.1, CB 1.9.1 and CB subs 2.02 with the intention of using SP transfer to pull across the data.
My specific problem is that mod_subs_202-E.zip and bot_subs_202-E.zip will not install, and I see old threads from 2012 reporting a known issue.

I would like specific confirmation which J3.x versions work with CB 1.9.1 and CB subs 2.02 and how to install these two recalcitrant extensions.

Please note the following:

1. Joomla 2.5 is no longer maintained (so I guess this is way you want to upgrade to J3)
2. CB 1.9.1 is no longer maintained also (so for the same reason you should plan on upgrading from CB 191 to Cb205+)
3. Your 4 year old CBSubs 2.0.2 version will most likely not work on Joomla 3.3.6 and even if it did you would have issues finding the right ioncube decoder for the newer PHP versions. CBSubs GPL 3.0 and 4.0 have no need for iconcube.

Indeed I am trying to get away from J25 and progress to J3x, and given what you have said it is no wonder that the standard J33 upgrade is not working.

I have in the past tried CB2.05 on the current site, and there were immediate issues that I could not resolve quickly so I went straight back to 1.9.1 as it says here below that it is compatible with J32 and it works for me now. Just put off for later.

www.joomlapolis.com/news/18397-joomla-32-2516-and-cb-191-released

Going to CBSubs2.05 or 2.06 is OK for me so long as it works.

It appears to me that the key is CBSubs and that 3.0 is fully compatible with J25 and J3x and CB 191 and 205. But I do not need or want the additional facilities of a premium product like CBSubs3. So paying out all that money has no added value what ever for us running a small society. The cost is just prohibitive. I just want 2.02 or its functionality to work on J33 with CB191 or 205 or what ever at an affordable cost. CBSubs3 lite?

You say that CBSubs2.02 will not work with J33 but what about J32 or other J3x? I basically asked this question first time around, but you did not answer. If this is not the case, then we will have to think very hard about whether we bother with any upgrading at all and just see how we go.

I have no idea if CBSubs 2.x will work on J3.x. My guess is might work ok for basic functionality. You will need at minimum CB 1.9.1 for J3.x though. Once you've CB 1.9.1 installed clone your site. On your clone upgrade to J3.x and see if things function ok still. Aside from that I don't know what to tell you. CB 1.x and CBSubs 2.x are both deprecated and I don't have an installation with either of them to test this for you.

OK I can try but I refer again to my first post, question not answered

My specific problem is that mod_subs_202-E.zip and bot_subs_202-E.zip will not install, and I see old threads from 2012 reporting a known issue.

How do I overcome this?

I see this, same issue in 2012:
www.joomlapolis.com/forum/153-professional-member-support/216151-solved-cant-install-cb-subs-bot-and-module-on-j-30

Is there anything to add? What does this mean (your words from 2012!):
The workaround is to edit them and replace the XML root tags "install" with "extension" and they should install fine.
This not understood by me
What was the 'new release' referred too?

You can't use CBSubs 2.x on Joomla 3.x without modifications to force it to install. It's not designed for Joomla 3.x in mind (it wasn't released at that time). You need at minimum CBSubs 3.x. My advise is to just continue with Joomla 2.x until you can upgrade CB to 2.0.6 and CBSubs to 4.x then upgrade to Joomla 3.x.

You would need to unpack the files and modify the XML file so it meets Joomla 3.x XML structure to force it to install.

CBSubs 3.x.
