I've spent most of the day going through the hundred+ files, especially the language files. Whether using a search utility on the directories or personally scanning them, I cannot find the string, "email address is already registered". I'm looking for the file with responses to CB registration errors. Any hint of a particular file?

I am guessing that this specific one comes from Joomla directly - please search the Joomla ini files for it.
That's a Joomla user object validation error. It is as follows.
Code:
JLIB_DATABASE_ERROR_EMAIL_INUSE="This email address is already registered."
It's found within Joomlas en-GB.lib_joomla.ini language file.
