After reading through the manual and perusing the forums, I could not find anything on changing the system messages, especially the invitations and acceptances.

Where do I go to make these changes?

They're language strings in GJs language files. If using GJ 2.x then you can install the English GJ language plugin included with GJ and translate it directly there. For GJ 3.x it'll translate the same way all other plugins are done through cbplugin folder in your language plugin.

Can you repeat that in a less technical way - for one who has never modified language files?
Also, will the procedure be the same in GJ3?

Please see the below for language usage information.

www.joomlapolis.com/cb-solutions/languages

Please be sure to also review the CB 2.0 Primer Book.

No, translating GJ 2.x and 3.x are different usages. GJ 2.x has its own language plugins while GJ 3.x doesn't need them and uses built in plugin translating functionality of CB.

I thought that the language plugins were for "translations" and not extension system messages. But okay.

I refer to the CB2 Primer a lot whenever I have questions, but I did not connect the two. Maybe if I was as educated as you on this subject?

Anyway, I downloaded the plugin zip file: "plug_language_english_en-GB_2.0.12.1.0.0+88309fb37" and have looked over the resulting files. The majority are PHP files (which I have absolutely no knowledge)and an xml file.

Since I don't know PHP, this is beyond my skill level. I can either take a few days and do a crash course in PHP and learn how OR disable the invite feature and wait for the new version.

Did I assess my situation correctly?

CB Primer Book -> Chapter 10 - Language Plugins pages 93-99 should cover this topic.
Please reread and if you still have questions post back specific problems and I will address.
