First the separate menu disappeared and we had to drop down the main CB one to find a sub-menu; now that has diasppeared and the only way to get at CBSubs management is via the Plugins management from the CB menu. Is there a way to restore a more direct link to CBsubs menu items?

The CBSubs menu used to be hardcoded into CBs core code. This is now longer the case. CBSubs itself is responsible for its menu item. For it to render CBs admin module needs to be sure it's set to output plugin menus. This is default enabled on new installs but older existing installs may not have it enabled. See the below on how to enable it.
If the menu item exists, but is nested under CB > Plugin Management that is also working as expected. We've too many plugins with menu items now causing overflow issues with Joomlas top navigation bar. Joomlas top navigation bar has no overflow handling resulting in the top navigation bar basically breaking. So a "Compact" mode was implemented and default enabled. You can turn that off in the same place you turn on plugin menus as explained in the above topic.
