I think I can break up user registration into steps.. but how and where

I want to have say 3x fields on my homepage to start... Then after they have completed those and proceed via a button the remaining form is required....

Or a tabbed type solution would do

You can't break it up into various pages, but it can be tabbed like profile edit for example which makes it seam like Steps. This is done using CB Conditional and its Step by Step feature (note this is going away in next release as tabbed registration will be in CB 1.10.0). Please see the below tutorial to use CB Conditional Step by Step.
