You could use a simple Select field then use the Layout parameters to override its display. The select would have options for your various awards. Then in the profile layout you can configure substitution IF usages to determine how it'd display (e.g. if you wanted it to display as an image). This avoids having your two database tables and keeps it all tied to their profile. Example profile layout as follows.

Next to allow editing the awards from profile view you could use CB Core Fields Ajax to make it ajax capable so you don't need to go to profile edit to change their awards. Aside from that you'll need to develop a custom awards solution or look into 3rd party award extensions.
