What exactly are you wanting to do with your plugin? We've CB Query Field and now CB Code Field which can output the results of a database query or PHP code as a field value. Both can handle a lot of cases to avoid needing a custom plugin. CB Auto Actions can also handle a lot of functionality of a custom plugin.
With that said we'll be providing more up to date tutorials after we've launched our new site. Including better API documentation.
