Select2 In Member Search was created by bins

Following your advice here I have set up a member profile field to allow members to make/add 3 choices in their profile (type of business).

When I go to a member list and want to search for one of those business types (i.e. get a list of everyone who is 'x' type) I am presented with a drop down list of all of the options. How can I make this a selectable search field i.e. start typing in the description and all of the options appear?

If you're using the usage shown below you'd just need to extend the triggers. Adding onBeforeDisplayUsersList to the triggers of your auto action should work.
