Select form data to place in a document

May I just confirm that to place data inside say a document created by an auto-action all I need do is place the field name in square brackets, then place where I wish the data to appear?

ie First Name [cb_firstname]

Or do I need to do a little more than that?

Correct, you can use substitutions in any auto action. For firstname though it's [firstname] as core fields don't have the cb_ prefix. See the below tutorial for substitution usage information and examples.
