Ok, will implement some test cases as that usage should work. Does the ajax save submit and redisplay fine, but just doesn't save to the database? or does it not submit at all?

It submits and redisplays fine and the data is saved in the db but only appears at the page reload.
It seems that there are errors in jQuery.validate.min.js with TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'i.settings')

Ajax edit of [cb:userfield field="FIELD_NAME" /] inside of a Joomla article seams to work fine in my tests. Have also tested ajax edit of a field in a Custom HTML field that has been substituted into an article.

Please ensure your install is completely up to date and that you've purged all cache then retry. If using something like JCH Optimizer be sure its cache has also been purged.
