Actually I am working on an improved version of Live Users.
It supports gender icons in the tooltip right now and the very next release features fully css styleable tooltip and list view.
I think it will have all the features you asked for in this thread. Have a look at

the current 1.5alpha is working there.
I plan to include some themes with the next release as well so you will have a choice of some diffrent views right from the start. If there is anyone knowledgeable in CSS an willing to help that would be a great contribution.
