Weird Installation issue

I just had an installation issue I can't figure out.

I'm running Joomla 1.0.15, and tried to upgrade from CB 1.2.3 to 1.7.1. I tried it first on TWO different testing servers, and both times it went fine. When I tried it on my live server, however, I got the message "Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory." The upload would go 100% and look like it as about to install before that error would come up.

The issue is NOT a problem of not enough upload_max_filesize, or an permissions issues. I spent 3 hours trying to figure it before I gave up. Thankfully, I had a clean version of 1.2.3 ready to install, and that reinstalled without a problem.

Any ideas what the problem could have been? Best I can think of is that the live site had either a) too many people on at the time I was trying to do it, or b) minor tweaks I made to other components somehow interfered. Neither of those sound too realistic. In trying to crack it, I tried disabling any mambots or other functions I could, in the hopes of getting it right.

Any ideas? Or any suggestions for an easy (non-expert) way of doing the install without needing the /media folder (which doesn't seem to actually hold any of the files anyway)?

I had the same issue trying to install CB 1.8:

My site had 100+ users online when I tried doing the upgrade. Is it possible that caused the problem? Is it worthwhile for me to try taking the site down and trying again?
