"Username/password already in use" error message

I'm using CB 1.8.1 on a Joomla 2.5.6 site. I'm testing some of my CB membership workflows, and I came across a problem during my tests. When I attempt to register with a first and last name already registered, I get an error message saying "User name in use" (see attached).

This isn't a huge problem at the moment -- and I can see how it is helpful in cases where people may have forgotten they have already registered or their registration is pending -- BUT what happens if I have two people attempting to register who have the same name? Two Mike Johnsons, for example, or two Jennifer Smiths? It appears there is no accommodation for those cases where there are legitimately two users with the same name.

It would be nice if there were some way to find a middle ground: ensure against duplicate registrations without using only the first and last name to make that determination. In the meantime, what can we do to deal with this problem?
