My company would be willing to pay a developer to work on making community builder the front-end for CivicCRM. Obviously that is a fairly large project, but I think it would be worthwhile to do.

Hi, you should contact the Civic crm developer. He was on the CB testteam wanting to integrate with CB. Dont know what the status is but if you express interest and offer to pay he might be more motivated.

Yeah i have had conversations with him before....they want to focus right now on building civicCRM itself and its integration with joomla 1.1 so they have put off work on integrating with other components such as community builder.
You should either post on the civicrm-dev list or look at their list of consultants. You are most likely to find someone who understand civicrm there, since it is insanely complicated.
