CB Functionality

I want to use CB for a non profit and allow donors to view only their profile and partial profiles of the student they support.
Is this possible. Are profile fields customizable so I can age age, grade, etc?
Also - is CB backed up by Akeeba 100%

yes; You would create two user groups. "Donors" and "Students" Each can have their own viewing preferences and as the admin, using the CB privacy plugin you can decide who sees what on a user profile.

There is a slew of fields that you can create. Well suitable for what you're wanting, I'm sure.

Akeeba has settings in it that allow you to choose the type of backup you want to do. One of which is a complete backup including the database. So, Yes.

CB is backed up by akeeba just fine (tried it).

CB can be the basis for your use case - there are multiple ways to do what you posted depending on exact details of your use case.

For example with the CB Privacy add-on (Part of Advanced+ membership) you can allow people to hide/show tabs to only their connections.

So, as I understand it, I could buy the privacy plugin, but I would need the groupjive plugin as well, which is only available with Advanced+ membership.

That's correct - if you need GroupJive and Privacy you should become an Advanced member.
