Users being sent a wrong password was created by alfredos
Environment: Joomla 1.6.1, CB 1.4 on Squeeze.

We create a user in CB with a blank password. User is sent an e-mail with the specified username and a seemingly random password. However, said password is incorrect, i.e., does not allow login.

User tries to recover password and the system sends a new password which is, again, incorrect.

If the password is set manually in CB, then the user can log in using this password.

Any ideas?

Randomly generated passwords must be sent in the Welcome AND Pending email. Users are given a temporary password with the Welcome email then given the correct one with the Pending email. This assumes you've admin approval or email confirmation enabled. If neither are enabled then only include password with the Welcome email.

Well perhaps this behaviour could benefit of a re-think. We have found it counterintuitive and error-prone. Sending a wrong password knowingly (that is, CB "knows" it is not going to work) sounds like a bug definition to me.

It is working as intended. If for instance you've email confirmation or admin approval a user is sent a password until they've confirmed their account or have been approved. Once done they'll be sent a valid password. To avoid all this just add the password tag to the Welcome email and they'll only be sent a single password once allowed to login. This is not a bug and has been investigated and rejected for redesign already. The workflows will be more intuitive with release of CB 2.0.
