Trying to build Group specific fields

Would have liked the ability to add certain fields to fill in if the user is an artist as opposed to being a festival. The way I see it now, each new field I add would be accessible by all to fill and many would be irrelevant.

Am I missing something in the grouping of the fields?

There is no grouping of fields. You could for instance create a drop-down field where user selects whether they're an artist or not then use incubator project CB Conditional to conditional display other fields based off that field. This would allow you to for instance hide 5 fields if that field is equal to artist.

Having now upgraded to 1.7 and latest CB, I want to return to this issue, however I am having great difficulty uploading CB Conditional to the site, it seems to decompress upon downlaod, a rezip and a CB or Joomla plugin manger fails to get it installed

Don't understand, you simply download from forge and install via CB > Plugin Management.

If you're on MACOSX then it's likely being decompressed then re-compressed with the _MACOSX folder for indexing, which breaks the package. No idea how to fix this if that's the case as I don't have a MAC.
