You don't. You're trying to access a page that isn't accessible to a Public user. So Joomla redirects to its login page, but then CBSubs intercepts it and sends you to CBs login page.

but, for example, when I click to a cbworkgroups forum notification link and am not logged in, I am not re-directed and, after logging in, am landed on the correct destination page in the forum. Why the difference?
This is fixed with CB Core Redirect 1.0 RC2 (to be released today). It'll intercept the com_users URLs and redirect to CB, but will preserve the "return" that Joomlas login module stores so you'll be sent back properly after login.
