We'll be addressing it with CB 2.0. We've opted not to change it for CB 1.x for compatibility sake. For example if we remove the parameter it'd effectively break peoples logins that are using it. Hardly anyone uses it so there wasn't much concern to mention it (you're basically the first in over a year to bring it up).
I suppose you could try supplying a full HTTP URL as the login redirect, but no idea if this will work. You could also force HTTP after login trigger using a redirect action in CB Auto Actions. However, if you've HTTPS you might as well use it throughout for added security and user peace of mind.
