1. Should I use "Smart Search" to search for CB users (or is it just for articles)?

2. Is that what bot_cb_search is (from professional downloads Joomla 2.5 CB Search plugin version 1.0.1)? if not, what is that called after it has been installed.

3. How do I make it only search within specific user groups only?

Not familiar with Joomlas smart search. We've no support for it. The search bot just adds search support to Joomlas search page and search module for searching CB users. I suppose you can regulate who can use it by changing the access to the CB search bot.

Can I use it to have a search for user types? How might I implement that? I'm thinking CB Conditionals?

It searches the fields you specify it to when the user inputs search criteria. For example if I select "Username", "First Name", and "Last Name" then input the criteria "Bob" it will check all 3 fields for all users to find a possible match. If there are matches it shows you the results. CB Conditional has no affect on this and it doesn't search for usergoups or anything of the sort.
