Sorry, don't know what more to advise as I'm not sure what you're trying to do at this point. You only want to update a user when XYZ field is ABC? This should be a simple condition after creating the field in CB > Field Management.

no, I need to run a php file when someone saves their profile, but here's the hard part: the query in the php file only needs to be run only on the person who saved their profile. Can I run the code directly in the auto plugin or do I have to run it in a standalone file? If so then I could write the code easily and not have to worry about filtering the query by when the profile was saved.

You can run it directly in a Code action set to PHP. Using [user_id] and other substitutions will always be for the user being saved so it wouldn't matter who was editing them.
