I would like my profile address to be in the format:
www.mysite.com/jim.jones
for a user Jim Jones instead of the current format.
Not easily, no. You can try a custom url rewrite rule in htaccess or try a 3rd party SEF extension that'll let you specify a custom rewrite. You can also do a custom 404 redirect and redirect all 404 to profile pages if the supplied link is a valid user name.
