[SOLVED] How can I allow my users to fill out their Facebook id

12 years 1 month ago - 12 years 1 month ago #216998 by oorzaak@oorzaak.nl
Hi,

I have a site om Joomla 1.5.26 with CB 1.9 and CB Connect. I created a tab called Social networks and I've moved the fb_userid field to this tab. Also, I've put some other FB fields on this tab using the Facebook social plugin (e.g. activity display and Like button).

Now I have this problem: I can set the FB user id when I'm in the CB back end as an administrator. But when a user is logged in on the front end, he/she cannot set the FB user id. I'm convinced that it is not intentional to make the admins enter the FB id's for all users. So please can anyone tell me how to accomplish this?

Kind regards,

Frits Jongbloets

edit: CB Connect version 3.4.2

another edit: When logged on in the front end edit mode as a standard user, the Social networks tab does not show at all.

I've added Twitter to the CB Connect setup. This gives similar results.

Also it puzzles me a bit why I can only fill out user id's for connecting with Twitter or FB. For both networks it is a hell of a job to find out what your user id is and it is certainly not something the average user will know how to do. Why can't they just enter the usual credentials into CB?

You don't set the IDs. It allows you to do so from backend simply for management purposes, but for users to synchronize the social site to your site they need to use the Link or Sign In buttons to register or link to their existing account.

Please review the below page as believe you're not understanding the purpose and usage of the plugin. It's designed to offer single sign on.

Hi Krileon,

Thanks for your reply again. You may be correct: I think I do not understand the idea of CB Connect. My questions are related to an earlier topic in this forum: www.joomlapolis.com/forum/153-professional-member-support/213886-social-media-integration

I'm looking for a way to show recent tweets, fb updates etc. to the public visitors of the CB profile pages. Just like any other Twitter module etc. would do, but independently for each profile. When I saw the various types of fields that are added by CB Connect I expected something of this kind.

Now I suppose this is not the case. It seems to me now that these fields import the Twitter, FB and other streams into CB for use by the logged in users themselves, and only on their own profiles. Do I understand this correctly?

CB Connect just pre-configures the Social Plugins and Widgets for you. You can of course us text fields and delimiter fields to do this, but for CB Connect to do it then user must first link their social site account to their CB account.

No, the user needs to first link their account so the social plugins, widgets, etc.. can be pre-configured for them. They'll do nothing if the user has not linked their social site to their CB account as for Facebook their ID is needed and for Twitter the ID/Username is needed. All of which is done automatically through CB Connect, but again their accounts need to be linked together.

Hi Krileon,

Think I'm getting a better understanding of it now.

Yet I have a new question. I've set up the whole thing again (as I was working in a test version of my site this was easy to do) and I started out trying to connect a user's profile by using the CB login page and clicking (for example) the Twitter sign in button, instead of adding the Twitter id from the back end.

This creates a new CB user (and Joomla user) which has the Twitter user name as its CB / Joomla user name. For this new user I can display latest tweets etcetera just as I wanted. However, I fail to connect to an existing CB / Joomla user. I just get this error message saying:

Your registration is not yet complete

I am then prompted to enter my e-mail. But when I do, I get a new error message saying:

This e-mail address is registered already. (well, it says so in my native language which is default on the site).

What did I do wrong?
