Is there some way of getting email notification when a user forms a new group? The group owner gets an email notification when a new user joins. How about the Category owner when a new group is formed?

Yup, navigate to Category > Notifications > Category > Groups then set "Create of new Group" as needed.

The closest I came to that is Configuration > Notifications > Categories > Defaults and I set the Group Approval dropdown to "Notify" as I did with all other notifications. I'm very sorry if I am misunderstanding your instructions.

The above navigation is on frontend, not backend. Frontend has a notifications page for Overview, Category, and Group pages to configure what notifications you'd like to receive.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. On the frontend, I also have had all the setting including the "Create of new Group" set to Notify, still not getting the notifications for group creation.

You don't receive a notification if you created the group in your own category. It won't notify you of your actions as that's redundant. Ensure you're testing with a registered user other then your own. Notifications by default send a PMS so within GJ > Config > Notifications > General you'll need to set it to send by Email.
