When I said it was set for Public UserGroup, I was referring to the second of the 'Visible' fields in the CBSubs plan; the setting for the assigned group is and always has been 'Registered'. Only when I attempted to first rectify this user's login did I see hiss group had got set to Public. I do want to keep the free registered plan so that I can restrict access when required.
I remain unclear as to the optimum settings for the two free registration fields in the CBSubs Settings; It seems that Yes to the first one is required in order to ensure that when paid subscriptions expire users revert to registered status; what should the second one be? I currently have it as Yes, but I still don't understand the implications.
Sorry to labour this point, but as it says in the manual, this is important and I want to know I have it right...

I see, usergroup assignment isn't required. If users are already registered as Registered then there's no need to adjust their usergroup based off subscription to Registered.

It depends on what you want. You normally should have at least 1 way for free users to register. 1 way is through a free lifetime plan. The other is by not using a plan and allowing registrations without a subscription. You don't have to provide a free way to register, but it's recommended as users could end up locked out due to not having a subscription (those expired should be locked and presented with renewal page) and this happens by a user going through the payment process and cancelling on the basket page; they are then registered with no subscription. Your free plan avoids all that mess though so you're fine.
