Enable debug mode and maximum error reporting to expose errors otherwise PHP is forced to suppress errors by Joomla. Once done re-test and see what the full error is. If still just showing error please check your server error log to see if any further information is provided there. It's possible you're hitting your mail servers outgoing hourly limit (you'll need to contact host to see).

I imported the selction directly to another list of a third party extension (rsmail) and it worked perfect. all mails went through etc. maybe check how their mailing works?
We use the same mailer library as Joomla (with some adjustments). I also can not duplicate your error. So it is specific to your install. Without further debug information from you (see my above post) I've no idea what's going on for your install. It could be as simple as a CB plugin loading and causing an error that's normally suppressed (the mailer grabs all errors). RSMail doesn't parse CB plugins for substitutions, run through tabs, run through fields, and process entire CB profiles so it working is irrelevant to CB. Please try using Mass Mailer for just your user to see if the error is caused this way it can be easily reproduced without risk of emailing users.
