I've spent an age researching the Profile Progress Field plugin, initially following the Joomlapolis Video but wondering why I couldn't locate the mentioned CB Triggers, so more searching seems to reveal in CB 1.9 we don't need the triggers now.
However, is it still possible or not to have the progress bar system, so people see physically in their profiles that they are X % of the way to completing their profiles?
Most of that information is out of date. All you need is CB Progress Field plugin found in the Professional downloads section. Once installed and enabled create a new progress fieldtype field within CB > Field Management and configure its display there as well as configure what fields to track for progress.
Also, when I logged in with a dummy test user I got forwarded to the "Edit Profile" section of CB so that is working just fine but if I don't enter any of the empty fields I get the following for e.g.: "Profile image : You didn't choose an image from the gallery".
Sounds like you have the Avatar field set to Required within CB > Field Management. CB Progress Field doesn't do any sort of validation. It also only does its redirect after login.
Firstly, where or which file can I edit to alter some of the wordings of the profile progress alert messages without losing said changes at the next CB update?
What alert messages? You mean when it finds a required field has no value? That is the following language string, which you can add to your CB language files.
'Profile incomplete! Fields: [fields]' => 'Profile incomplete! Fields: [fields]',
Also is it no longer possible with not having to use CB Trigger plug-in any more, to select which fields are triggered for forcing a completion in users profile etc?
CB Triggers doesn't exist anymore. It also isn't needed. CB Progress Field will do the redirect on login and only on login. It also only checks for Required fields that have no value.
