I suggest using Chrome or Firebug for Firefox then right clicking and inspecting the tabs. This should then show you the CSS that's styling it so you can see where you need to make your changes exactly. Most likely your Joomla template is trying to style it as the tabs use ul > li elements with a elements, which commonly get styled by Joomla templates.
