You can't. It's an either/or scenario.I would also like to show the search by default.
If you're on Joomla 2.5.11 or 3.1.1 you should see the parameters below "Type" when creating an Internal menu item to a userlist, but I don't know if they work entirely. Aside from that the only solution is to create an internal userlist URL then edit it in your database to add listid and search mode to its URL.But I can't use this External Joomla menu link if the search has to be the homepage. System does not allow External Page as homepage.
How can I handle this?

That's normal and safe to ignore.if I choose userlist, the system always sets "Logout action".
You would need to create an internal menu item to the userlist page. Then navigate to your _menus database table and modify the URL. You'd then need to append "&listid=LIST_ID_HERE" to the URL for it to be an internal menu item to a specific userlist. You can then append the searchmode parameter if needed (you can see the two parameters when editing your userlist and reviewing their URLs at the top). Can you discribe a bit more what you mean with "the only solution is to create an internal userlist URL then edit it in your database to add listid and search mode to its URL." How does that work???
