We would like users to be able to easily upload their photos into their groups without completely overwhelming the storage limits. Unfortunately our users don't know much about Photoshop or compressing images to reduce file sizes. Can you suggest a way for us to automatically re-size and compress photos as they are uploaded?

It doesn't do on the fly compression. It only will re-size to ensure maximum height and width are respected. You can set a maximum file size limit though to prevent them from uploading large images. You could also setup a CRON job to run every now and again to compress new images using imagemagick or some other library. Best approach is probably a CRON to convert all gif/png images to jpg with 90% ratio to give best image quality and compression ratio.
