Change "Field Type" after the event! was created by paurray
I have some "Fields" set up.

eg: "Tools of Trade"

Users have inputed values

eg

Final Cut, Lightworks or Blender

Now I reckon that I have the wrong selection type

And I want to change the selection type!

In the Community Builder Field Edit Type the drop down menu is greyed out for Type!

So I am guessing this is not possible after the event. So to speak.

My question:

If I set up a new Community Builder Field and name it in my case "Tools of Trade new and improved"

And then add the exact same "values"

eg

Final Cut, Lightworks or Blender

Will they be sucked into the new Field.

i.e. will it work like the old one just with a different "Field Type"

Can I then delete the old Filed i.e. "Tools of Trade" with out any repercussions!

thanks

Paul

I need to rework the "Values" as they are out of date

You can't change a fields type. You should delete it and re-create it. The only way to change it is to change it directly in your database.

"and re-create it."

Are we on the same page?

"I want to change the selection type!"

In my eg

1) Delete (Tools of Trade)
2) Recreate (Tools of Trade)
3) Add values as required to recreated "Tools of Trade" field Type (eg Lightworks, Blender etc)

Then all new input will go into the old values?

eg a newly registered Lightworks user will go into the pile of people who used Lightworks before the Tab Type change?

Just double checking that I have understood!

As in you want to change it from a Drop Down (Multi-select) to for example Drop Down (Single select)? If this is what you're wanting to do then you can't unless you change the fields type directly in your database table (_comprofiler_fields) or you recreate it.

Then all new input will go into the old values?

No, all users input values would be lost.

Yes

What does Lost mean? I could theoretically create a new "selection type" eg "Check Box" Create the values for this eg "Lightworks" etc and then do a copy and paste action!

I have about 50 Users who have entered stuff as of now!

If you delete a field then its column is deleted too, which means any values stored in that column are also deleted. So if you delete it then you lose all the user values for that field.

Then you best bet is to navigate to _comprofiler_fields database table and change what type it is directly then run CB Tools so it can do any needed repairs. This will maintain your field values so they're not lost. You should still make a database backup before doing this though just to be safe.

Will discuss with Beat and Nick to see if I can implement the ability to change a fields type and name after creation to eliminate this issue entirely, but can't make any guarantees.
