Hi Nick

I skimmed through your tutorial with great interest. It is a little but over my head but I could probably get a friend to help me implement it. I have a very simple question. My Site is set up so that non registered users can search profiles but not actually look at the profiles.

finalbug.net/component/comprofiler/userslist/Search%20BUG%20Members/search?Itemid=401

With your filter is it possible to set it up in a similar way.

i.e. allow people to search for others with similar skills with out being registered.
But not be allow them to look at the actual profiles!

I can imagine it being a very good way to encourage people to register

thanks

Paul

Can't you just create a Public user list for that and keep profiles set to only appear for registered users?

"Can't you just create a Public user list for that and keep profiles set to only appear for registered users? "

Is that a rhetorical question?

This is how the Site works:

A) Site where only logged in people can look at profiles

More Complex versions

B_) An exception to this rule that means non logged in people can look at bloggers profiles
C) A further refinement that means non logged in users can contact Bloggers

Kyle helped me to configure it as I was missing something in the workflow.

www.joomlapolis.com/forum/153-professional-member-support/222385-please-help-trouble-shoot-workflow?limitstart=0

"Have configured it for you and it's now working as expected. All profiles are publicly accessible if the profile has "Blogger" field checked. If it is not then the user must be logged in to view the profile. You can test this as follows.

Blogger: finalbug.net/members/userprofile/paurray
Non-Blogger: finalbug.net/members/userprofile/ysbrand

When not logged in you can access the Bloggers profile, but you can not access the Non-Bloggers profile.

When logged in you can access everyones profile regardless of the Blogger field."

Getting that working nearly drove me nuts and I am very reluctant to start playing with something that I do not understand...

I can not afford to break a working system again :S

Do you think that your workflow would work with how my Site is presently set up?

I may not be very technically minded but I do get it this workflow of yours could be a very nice capstone for my Site. It is better than what I succeed in implementing here:

Your profiles are already protected. Just create a CB Userlist that searches everybody. When they click to go to a users profile they can't access it'll just error as configured.

“Just create a CB Userlist that searches everybody.”

Stupid question Kyle, there is no reason why I can not use any existing list is there?

eg this one here:

I still have to figure out how Nicks filter works...

but, I am guessing that it will go to the list I tell it to

In this case it is for all Registered (Search BUG Members) users.

Which is set up and working with a simple search as instructed here:

www.joomlapolis.com/forum/153-professional-member-support/222365-solved-how-to-get-this-search-for-cb

Sorry about the paranoia but hey I am an expert border these days :silly:

Correct, you can use whatever userlist you like. Direct access to profiles are protected regardless.

I'm not sure what filter you're talking about though. A CB Userlist filter applies a WHERE statement to the Userlist query to limit what users it queries. You can for example use it to filter out users with a specific field value from showing at all.
