We have a Joomla 1.5 website that uses the Joomlapolis holly trinity CB, CBSubs and Groupjive. Currently we are migrating this website to a Joomla 3.x environment.

I've seen many of the posts regarding migration on this forum suggesting the use og jUpgrade. We had bad experiences using jUpgrade in the past in other projects and this is not our preferred method.

We created a clean Joomla 3.2 instance and migrated the core data using SP Upgrade. As for CB, CBSubs and GroupJive I installed the latest versions on both joomla 1.5 and joomla 3.2. After that I compared the tables structure for this components between both instances and found out that other then our custom fields on jos_comporfiles the tables are the same.

Questions:
1 - If we dump the tables from the Joomla 1.5 instance, import them on Joomla 3.2 and run cb database tools, would the be an alternative solution?
2 - Other then the steps mentioned on item 1 is there something else that we should be paying attention to?

Thank you,

I've no experience with migrations beyond manually transferring the database data, but this requires correction of all view access level and usergroup usage, which can be quite a bit depending on what is installed. Directly copying database and running CB Tools will not fix this for you, you have to comb your entire site and fix it manually. This means tab access, plugin access, all access parameters (there's a lot in CBSubs, GJ, and various plugins).

I wrote a migration script for jUpgrade when it was first coming out that did this automatically, but since then I've no idea what has happened to jUpgrade to make it so unreliable.

In short it's going to take a chunk of time, but the good news is you shouldn't have to do any sort of migration again for quite some time as hopefully changes between current and future Joomla releases won't be so drastic.

Hi Kyle!

1 - Can you, please, be a bit more specific about the permissions, access level and user groups that we will have to setup again once we move the data to Joomla 3.2?

2 - What kind of settings are those, where can we find it?

Thank you,

I can't really be specific as there's dozens upon dozens of usergroup, view access level, and permissions usages throughout CB and its plugins. In general you'll need to check tab management, plugin management, list management, and of course every user in user management. That doesn't include any parameters added by plugins.

Hi Kyle!
We still did not quite get what do you mean by dozens of usergroup, view access level, and permissions usages. Would that be something similar to the publish field on the groupjive plugin shown below?

Thank you,

No, it's Usergroup and View Access Level usages. Take a look at Tab Management and its Access Level column. If you go from J1.5 to J3.2 all of that will be incorrect so they all need to be fixed after the migration. That is just 1 of many locations.
