Yes, using a Field action in CB Auto Actions on the after profile update and after registration triggers. You'll then need to condition the date field to ensure it's before the current date which you can do with the below.
Conditional: strtotime([cb_date]) Less Than strtotime([cb:date format="Y-m-d H:i:s" /])
Next select the following.
Field: Field X
Operator: Set
Value: 1
