With Gmail, maybe you don't change the DNS MX and TXT like needed by mandrill :
MX 10 & 20 points to xxxx.in1(2).mandrillapp.com
and the TXT SPF and DKM1 values are mandrill values.
It's a good way to use the CMS API for the emails because they follow the CMS update.
Right, we don't set those and your extension does not integrate with CB so they're not being set there either (don't think it can either as we don't expose a trigger in our mailer). We'll be improving our API further as we work through CB 2.x releases. For now I suggest continuing using it with your modifications.
