You can do this with CB Auto Actions and its GroupJive action. Have it fire after profile update and after registration. Then check your field value in the Conditional. The CB Auto Actions action can let you create GJ categories, groups, or join groups automatically. You can also use GJ Auto, but it's being deprecated in next GJ release as it does the same thing as CB Auto Actions.
