I am working my way through my first build, I am using Joomla 3.3.3.
My problem is that I have created a 'required field' but the icon doesn't show as such when viewed within the particular Tab when viewed within User Management.
You probably have admin validation disabled within CB > Configuration > User Profile. This allows admins to freely edit profiles without needing to be restricted to field validation such as required fields (very handy). I suggest testing frontend registration as it should display as required fine.
