With 2.0.1 installed edit your avatar/canvas fields then navigate to Parameters > Image Display then adjust "Pending Default" and "Empty Default" as needed. These were reversed in 2.0.0 and their labels now reflect the parameter properly now. So you won't see an immediate fix until you adjust the parameters correctly.

Is what I made and you can look to attached screenshot. No matter what I choose (no Image or any other) because the canvas still black and avatar not a circle.

I use Joomla 3.3.6 - CB 2.0.4 - CBSubs 4 - Several Incubator plugins
I am unable to confirm your issue. "No Image" or selecting a different image are both working fine across 3 test sites.
