In guestbook and wall entries, the avatar is shown!
Been this way always by design.
The blog author is always the profile owner and you can see the profile owner's avatar since you are already on the profile page. No need to flood the same image again and again.
The other tabs (wall and guestbook) accept posts from different people so it makes sense to show images there.
