I am planning for migration of my J! 2.5.16 to J! 3.3.6
and CB 1.9.1 to 2.0.4.

I got stuck on J! 2.5.16 when J! devs changed the User name rule, no longer support for spaces in user name. (Will ask in Joomla forum about that in J! 3.3 too)

QUESTION:
Has CB 2.0.4 any code that needs tweaking/override to allow spaces in user names?
I have several thousends of users and cannot change the way to handle user names.

Thanks,
Sune

Not sure about the coding side of it, but as I am using it this way I can report that with my install of the current versions of Joomla and CB users with spaces and special characters work fine!
Don't know how the migration process of your site will handle it, though. I skipped Joomla 2.x completely.

PS: of course, other extensions might have problems with this usage

CB does not restrict the username. We used to when the fallback username was taking place, but that's not an issue anymore. With 2.5.27 spaces are allowed though so you're not forced to upgrading to Joomla 3.x, but I would recommend upgrading.

I suggest the following for your migration though.

1. Backup your site
2. Upgrade Joomla to latest 2.x
3. Upgrade CB
4. Upgrade CB plugins
5. Review and reconfigure your site as needed
6. Upgrade Joomla to 3.x

This should give you the most ideal and less issue prone upgrade process. Be sure to test between each step to ensure nothing is broken. You maybe shocked by the amount of changes in CB 2.x so please take it slow and be sure your CB plugins have been upgraded as needed.
