I am having troubles making this work. I have the lastest versions of CB and joomla and the plugin in published. That being said I cannot get the substitutions to take place. I am simple seeing the code instead.

Please provide exact version numbers of everything and exact experiment you tried.
Once installed and enabled in Extensions > Plug-in Manager you need to surround your substitutions with the parsing tag. Example as follows.
{cb}[username]{/cb}
If you just do [username] it will not parse.
