The avatar gallery images are stored in:
Joomla root path /images/comprofiler/gallery where you will see a set of 28 files that represent the full-size and thumbnail size images.
You can make additions here but anything you remove will just be replaced next time you update CB.
SO you should make a new folder example /images/comprofiler/mygallery and place images there and then edit your avatar field Parameters -> Image Gallery -> Path parameter.
