How to change registration without hacking core files

Hi guys, back in 2013 i made a website with CB 1.8.1. Cuz i was a noob back then and took the easy way out i hacked core files to get CB to do what i wanted.

Now i need you guys help to figure out how to do it the right way in the latest CB version.

I have a db column with membership id's. Users will only be able to register ONCE when they enter a valid membership ID.
