The profile image is the full sized image already. It's scaled as needed to fit the space, but you can use CB Auto Actions and a code action on the after profile display trigger to add a lightbox if you want or use a 3rd party lightbox content plugin combined with the Layouts feature of the avatar to have a lightbox open on click.
It's unlikely something like this would be implemented into the core though; especially as our field classes are still legacy and we've plans to completely rewrite them we are avoiding adding new features to them as much as possible.
