If it is an email message, then user in informed from his/her email client.

It it is a private message (uddeIM needs to be installed and configured), then user will can be informed either by email notification (uddeIM configuration) or by uddeIM integration in the CB Login module.

I have not found or enable PMS integration into CB configuration? to view the amount of new messages.

You need to download and install UddeIM. It's a completely separate extension. Once done just enable Private Message System within CB > Plugin Management. See the CB Primer Book for further details.
