Trigger variable substitutions are substituted in as [var1-10_VARIABLE]. For example in your screenshot [var1_user_id] is the ID of the user creating the group. You can use [name] for example to get the name of the user who triggered the action.

No, var1-10 is to substitute the variables of the trigger. To substitute from the user object you'd just do normal substitutions (e.g. [name]). To link to the group you either need to supply its raw format or try using the functions of the object like done in the Links usage. The raw format would be as follows.
